Joe Biden’s Relentless Focus on Social Security Powered His Victory
(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Jon “Bowzer” Bauman, President of Social Security Works PAC, on Joe Biden winning the 2020 presidential election:
“Social Security was on the ballot this year. Joe Biden ran on protecting and expanding our earned benefits. Donald Trump ran on a promise to destroy Social Security by terminating the program’s dedicated funding. Not surprisingly, polling showed that preventing Social Security cuts was a top voter concern.
Joe Biden made Social Security central to his campaign. He brought up Trump’s plan to defund Social Security in his convention speech and at nearly every campaign stop. In the closing weeks of the campaign, Biden’s team spent over $3 million airing an ad focused on Social Security in every battleground state.
Older voters listened. Seniors across the country swung towards Democrats, and Biden won a majority of voters over 65 in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
We look forward to working with President Biden and Congressional Democrats to protect and expand our Social Security system.”
