Statement on Trump’s Budget Director Refusing to Rule Out Cuts to Social Security and Medicare
(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, in reaction to OMB Director Mick Mulvaney’s comments at the White House press briefing today:
“Donald Trump made protecting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid a centerpiece of his campaign. But once he got into office, he appointed men like Mick Mulvaney to his cabinet. Mulvaney once called Social Security a “ponzi scheme” and has pushed plans to massively cut it for years.
Today, Mulvaney refused to commit to keeping Trump’s promise. We demand that Trump pledge to veto all cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid during his address to Congress tomorrow night. If he refuses, it will be crystal clear that he blatantly lied to the American people. “
