The Voters Have Spoken: At the Next Debate, Clinton and Trump Must Discuss Whether to Expand or Cut Social Security

“Do you support expanding, and not cutting, Social Security’s modest benefits?”

Over 30,000 Americans have voted for Secretary Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to be asked this critical question at the next presidential debate. It is the third most popular question (out of tens of thousands) on Open Debates, a project that allows the American people to pick the questions that they want asked in the Presidential debate. The moderators of the next debate have promised to consider the 30 questions with the most votes.

“The overwhelming support for this question shows that Social Security is a top priority for voters,” said Nancy Altman, founding co-director of Social Security Works. “They want to hear about whether the candidates have plans to expand Social Security as a solution to our nation’s looming retirement income crisis or if they are planning to cut benefits and make that crisis worse.”
