Seniors Need Senators Sinema & Manchin to Support Voting Rights

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Jon “Bowzer” Bauman, President of Social Security Works PAC:

“The foundation of our democracy is in grave danger. Every year, in state after state, Republicans pass more extreme laws eroding the right to vote.

Many older Americans are physically incapable of standing in line for hours to vote. They are hit particularly hard by laws that eliminate vote by mail, ban ballot drop boxes, and close polling places.

Congress needs to stop these attacks on our right to vote by passing both the Freedom to Vote & John Lewis Voting Rights Acts. But Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin are standing in the way.

Sinema and Manchin took an oath to defend the Constitution of the United States. They are on the cusp of breaking that oath. They intend instead to side with the racists, ageists, and misogynists who are trying to restrict Americans’ right to vote.

If Sinema and Manchin refuse to break the Jim Crow filibuster to set basic federal standards for voting rights, both their legacies will be cemented. They will be forever remembered in American history as villains who betrayed their constituents to desecrate our democracy.

But it’s still not too late for Sinema and Manchin to change course and support making even narrow changes in Senate rules to allow passage of the Freedom to Vote & John Lewis Voting Rights Acts. They must do so immediately.”
