President Biden Vows to Protect and Expand Social Security, As Republicans Scheme to Destroy It

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Nancy Altman, President of Social Security Works, on President Joe Biden’s State of the Union Address:

“Tonight, President Biden renewed his promise to protect and expand Social Security. As he explained, Social Security is fully affordable — we simply need to require the wealthiest among us to contribute their fair share.

Biden also highlighted his success at lowering drug prices, and laid out a roadmap to keep taking on Big Pharma greed. Lowering drug prices lets seniors and people with disabilities keep more of their hard-earned Social Security benefits, and also saves money for the federal government.

In contrast, Republicans just voted an extreme MAGA budget out of the House Budget Committee on a party line vote. Their budget includes a so-called ‘fiscal commission’: A death panel designed to slash Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors. Donald Trump recently endorsed the commission’s foremost champion, Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington (R-TX).

Today’s events show that President Biden and Democrats are fighting to protect and expand Social Security and Medicare, while Donald Trump and Republicans are scheming to gut them behind closed doors.”
