Donald Trump Plans to Defund and Destroy Social Security

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, on the exchange about Social Security at tonight’s Presidential debate:

Over and over and over again, Donald Trump has promised to defund Social Security if he is reelected. According to Social Security’s Chief Actuary, Trump’s plan would destroy Social Security, ending disability benefits by 2021 and all benefits by 2023.

Tonight, Joe Biden rightfully alerted the American people to Trump’s scheme to destroy our earned benefits. In response, Trump did what he always does when backed into a corner: He shamelessly lied.

No one should be fooled. Social Security is a top concern for voters, and the contrast between the two candidates is clear: Joe Biden is running on a platform of protecting and expanding Social Security, and paying for it by requiring the wealthy to contribute their fair share. Donald Trump is running on a promise to defund and destroy Social Security.”
