Every Republican on the Senate Finance Committee Voted to Continue The DOGE Destruction of Social Security
(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Nancy Altman, President of Social Security Works, on the Senate Finance Committee voting to advance the nomination of Frank Bisignano, Donald Trump’s choice to lead the Social Security Administration:
“Today’s vote, entirely along party lines, shows that Senate Republicans are full partners in Elon Musk’s war on Social Security. They lack the courage of their convictions, however, voting off camera behind closed doors instead of in the sunshine for their constituents to see.
Musk’s DOGE has spent the last six weeks taking a chainsaw to Social Security’s service to the American people. Musk’s operatives have pushed out over 3,000 Social Security workers, including those with the most experience and knowledge. And Musk has plans to fire thousands more.
Musk’s minions are making changes that will force millions of additional Americans to travel, hours in some cases, to overcrowded, understaffed field offices – which, ironically, Musk is also threatening to close. Musk’s operatives are also planning to rewrite Social Security’s codebase, which experts warn could crash the system.
All of this is causing chaos at the Social Security Administration and enormous stress for seniors, people with disabilities, and families.
At Bisignano’s confirmation hearing, he claimed that he was not involved in the destruction of the last six weeks. But as Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) revealed to the committee, a brave whistleblower, together with nineteen corroborating civil servants named in the whistleblower’s statement, have proven otherwise.
Bisignano, who describes himself as a “DOGE person” and has a long record of DOGE-style cuts at the private businesses he has run, was deeply involved in installing DOGE at the agency and involved with the destructive changes the Trump administration has made at the agency since inauguration.
Social Security needs a commissioner who will reverse DOGE’s destruction. Bisignano is not that commissioner. Instead, he will cement and increase the destruction.
The full Senate should join every Democrat on the Finance Committee in rejecting Bisignano’s nomination.”
