Now is the Time to Redouble The Fight Against Trumpcare
(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, in reaction to Paul Ryan’s decision to postpone today’s vote on the so-called American Health Care Act (AKA Trumpcare.)
“This disaster of a bill would destroy Medicaid, raid Medicare of over $117 billion, and raise health insurance premiums for older, poorer, and sicker Americans by as much as 750%. It would leave 24 million Americans uninsured, and drastically weaken coverage for millions more by eliminating essential benefits. All of this to to give a massive tax handout to billionaires, health insurance CEOs, and big pharma.
Yet unbelievably, the current incarnation of the bill can’t pass the House because it is not cruel enough to the American people. In the coming days and weeks, we can expect the bill to be rewritten to gut our country’s health care system even more to provide even larger tax handouts for the wealthy.
Now is not the time to become complacent that this horrific plan will fail – the fight is only beginning. We will continue working with our allies and grassroots activists around the country to defeat Trumpcare and work towards a future where every American has a right to quality health care coverage.”
