Seniors to Protest Outside Rep. John Duarte’s Turlock Office
Duarte and House Republicans Plan to Create a Commission to Slash Social Security and Medicare
Turlock, CA – This Tuesday, June 20th at 11am PT, seniors will hold a rally outside of Rep. John Duarte’s district office at 90 S. First Street, protesting a planned commission to slash Social Security and Medicare. The rally marks the launch of a Stop Social Security Cutters campaign that will include billboards and additional rallies telling Duarte and other Republicans in nearby districts to keep their hands off Social Security and Medicare.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who Duarte voted for and enthusiastically supports, recently announced plans for the commission. In February, Duarte claimed that we need to “quit putting [Social Security] on the credit card” and “have an adult discussion” — disregarding the fact that Social Security doesn’t add a single penny to the deficit.
Duarte also voted for the Republican debt ceiling bill, also known as the Default on America (DOA) Act. The DOA Act would have slashed funding for the Social Security Administration by 22 percent. This would make it far more difficult for seniors and people with disabilities to claim their earned benefits by closing field offices, increasing wait times, and forcing the agency to lay off thousands of workers. The bill would have also cut many other essential programs, including Meals on Wheels, Veterans’ benefits, and rental assistance.
While the DOA Act did not become law, it shows what Rep. Duarte and his fellow Republicans would do if they had full control of the federal government.
