(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, endorsing the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act, which was introduced this morning by Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) along with Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT), Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), and over 100 House Democrats:

“Prescription drug prices are out of control for one reason: Greed. The only way to bring them down is to take on big pharma monopolies, and this bill does just that. Not only does it empower Medicare to negotiate drug prices, it adds teeth by giving the government the power to strip pharmaceutical corporations of their monopolies if they refuse to cooperate.

Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans claim that they want to bring down drug prices. The question is if they will match these tough words with action. Their response to this bill will be an instructive answer.”
