Statement on Donald Trump and Paul Ryan Meeting

(Washington, DC) —The following is a statement from Nancy Altman, co-director of Social Security Works, in response to today’s meeting between presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan:

“This week, Donald Trump’s camp signaled a willingness to cut Social Security benefits. Trump’s sudden departure from promising to protect Social Security benefits to a willingness to cut them is disturbing, though not surprising. Cutting benefits — dismantling Social Security brick by brick  is totally out of touch with the American people. However, it brings him in line with House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has a long history of trying to slash Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Are these the “shared principles” that Trump and Ryan are uniting around?”
