Every Version of Trumpcare is a Disaster for Older Americans

(Washington, DC) — The following is a statement from Alex Lawson, Executive Director of Social Security Works, in reaction to the Trumpcare motion to proceed passing on a party line vote:

“Nearly every Republican Senator just voted to start the process of taking health care away from tens of millions of Americans.

No one should be fooled by claims that they don’t know what they voted for. Every version of repeal-and-replace put forward by Mitch McConnell destroys Medicaid as we know it, raids Medicare, and makes health care unaffordable for Americans, especially those in their 50s and early 60s. That is what fifty Republican Senators (and Mike Pence) have just endorsed.

But it’s not too late for those Senators to redeem themselves. McConnell will now hold votes on specific health care bills. It only takes three Republicans to avert disaster by voting down all of these bills. Grassroots activists around the country are furiously mobilizing to demand they do just that.

If Republicans do move forward with their catastrophic health care repeal plans, the American people – especially the seniors who turn out in every midterm election – will not let them forget it in 2018.”
